The Rosary
A counted devotion pairing repeated prayers with meditation on events in the life of Christ.
A meditative devotion prayed on beads, pairing repeated vocal prayers with reflection on twenty mysteries: scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary grouped in four sets. John Paul II, who added the set called the luminous mysteries in 2002, presented the rosary as a way of contemplating the life of Christ in Mary's company. Marian in texture, it is Christ-centered in content.
The Rosary is a structure rather than a single prayer. It counts decades on beads, each decade an Our Father, ten Hail Marys and a Glory Be, while the person praying holds in mind one of the mysteries, an event from the life of Christ or of Mary.
There are four sets of mysteries. The Luminous mysteries were added by John Paul II in 2002, recently enough that older devotional books do not carry them.
It is prayed alone, in groups, and at wakes, where a rosary said beside a body is a common form of vigil. The repetition is the mechanism: the words occupy the surface so the mind can rest on the scene.
Does it have a text?
Its component prayers are held here individually from named public-domain editions: the Our Father and the Hail Mary, and the Salve Regina that closes it. What is not published is a sequence or an instruction for praying it, which would be guidance about practice rather than a text.
