Prayers in English English
18 prayers this site holds in English, each printed from a named edition and checked against it before it was published.
Most of this corpus is in English, and almost all of it is here for the same reason: it was published before 1929 and is out of copyright in the United States. That single fact shapes what the site can hold. The Book of Common Prayer of 1662, the Douay-Rheims, the Coverdale psalter, the Jewish Publication Society translation of 1917, Singer's prayer book of 1890, the Baltimore Manual and the Raccolta are all here because of their dates, and the modern translations most congregations actually use are absent for the same reason.
That is why the English on this site reads old. A 1662 book spells vnto, and a 1917 psalm says mine eyes, and modernising either would quietly substitute an edition we did not cite for the one we did. Each text was transcribed twice, independently, and where the two transcriptions disagreed by even one character the text was not published.
